"I see no problem with that Commander. We can make the arrangements when we return from the mission." "Thank you, Sir," Eva said, with a nod. "My Aunt, Marie Straton would be accompanying the twins. She has been serving as a nanny since they were a few months old and is currently with them on board the Boudicca." Eva stood. "I should get back to my duties. Good day, Sir." Eva snapped to attention briefly before turning sharply and heading for the door. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, ACEO Ensign (jg) Eoin Mac Liam 11:35) "What do you mean by differences?" Eoin finally managed to sputter out. "Lt. Wright and I haven't had much trouble working together at all." He reached for his cup of tea, trying to make it seem that he had recovered from his episode, but the clattering china betrayed the fact that he still felt like the rug had just been pulled out from under him. "So" the first officer said in a more casual tone, taking another casual sip of her drink. "I take it then that you still haven't told her about your holo-engineer idea and that you've already run the idea past Captain Sash? That you talked to Captain Sash BEFORE talking to her? I understand she really doesn't like that. When people break the chain of command like that and go over her head. Is that true?" Eoin knew in an instant what she was talking about. "Ah, that. Well, I meant no offense by going over her head. It was an idea I had had late the night before the meeting, and so I stayed up all night drawing up some specifications. Then, I presented them to the captain that morning. I honestly meant nothing by it, but I'm not one who likes to sit on an idea for very long." He breathed out slowly, relieved that that was all it was. He had made a stupid mistake, but at least it wasn't something absolutely disastrous. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 11:36) "Ah, that. "So," Eva said with a raised brow lifting the PADD and looking at it again briefly before looking back at the young Ensign. "You haven't preformed any tests to see if it will actually work? You just had the idea *late* the night before and threw together some specs and presented them to the Captain without even testing them? Is that correct? Doesn't that seem a bit rash Ensign?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, ACEO Ensign (jg) Eoin Mac Liam, 11:37) "Ah, that. Eoin knew he had to watch the next words out of his mouth, but was starting to think that the new First Officer's reason to call him in here was to tear him limb from limb. However, the violent tendencies of his Irish roots wouldn't let him go down without a fight. "With all due respect, ma'am, it was a rough idea that I wanted to gauge interest in with the upper ranks before it went into development. I have already said that I meant no offense. What else do you want? Do you want me to crawl on my hands and knees to Rome and beg forgiveness of God and all the saints?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1325) "Understood Commander, you have my apology then for the lapse in judgment." Lt. Haynes said as he blinked his eyes as he let out a breath silently. "It will not happen again." "See that it doesn't," Eva said, "and if you *ever* disrespect me again like you just did I *will* have your lieutenant's pip, remember that. Now, I called you here as I am attempting to get better acquainted with the rest of the senior officers. Crew evaluations are one of my duties as First Officer. I feel those evaluations would be more precise if I knew the officers a little better. So, knock that chip off your shoulder, get a drink from the replicator, if you so desire, take a seat and tell me how your settling in on the Hades." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, CSO, Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes, 1326) "See that it doesn't," Commander Straton said, "and if you *ever* disrespect me again like you just did I *will* have your lieutenant's pip, remember that. Now, I called you here as I am attempting to get better acquainted with the rest of the senior officers. Crew evaluations are one of my duties as First Officer. I feel those evaluations would be more precise if I knew the officers a little better. So, knock that chip off your shoulder, get a drink from the replicator, if you so desire, take a seat and tell me how your settling in on the Hades." After nodding in agreement Jack moved the 8 feet to the replicator positioned off to the side of the FO's desk and used the opportunity to get a hold of himself. Waiting for his ice water with a lemon wedge to appear and turned with his back to her he closed his eyes. ~Stupid Jack, ever since Jabel you've bristled like Pavlovs' dog at hostility from a superior officer whether you earned it or not and if you don't learn to control that reflex you will NOT go far in this mans' starfleet! And it wasn't ten minutes, more like five... or less that he chewed you out.~ Jack seldom had given a superior officer reason to be displeased so that part of him rarely showed, today though he made a mental note that he was going to be working on putting that emotional response out to pasture where it belonged. Taking a cleansing breath he reached into the replicator and pulled out the glass of ice water and turned back to the offered chair, after sitting down in it he perched on the edge for an instant while looking down before sliding back into the seat and meeting her gaze. Settling in he took a drink, the crystalline clink of the ice sliding to the bottom of the glass sounding loud in the office. He hesitated for an instant before trying to lighten the mood a bit. "The reputation that preceded you appears to have been a bit exaggerated sir though I certainly don't want to put that to the test again..." He gave a wan smile knowing it probably wouldn't matter but what the heck! "You're right about the chip, since my first run in with an overzealous Lieutenant I've carried it around like a bat..." He sighed, why was he bothering to explain himself? She wouldn't be interested in his problems... or his apologies either most likely. (Reply: Eva IYW) "But to the question at hand." He lowered the glass to his lap and cradled it in both hands. "I've found the ship to be a real sweetheart, she's a marvel of technological achievement with an experienced command complement and hard-working crew, I couldn't have asked for any better for my first taste of running a department and It's kept me extremely busy... just like I'd hoped. I've gotten to know several of the officers both within and without my department and I must say I've been impressed... especially by some of the technicians in science." He paused, what else was there to say? He'd answered her question pretty exhaustively in two sentences. "I'm looking forward to serving on this ship for some time to come." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1327) Eva watched Lt. Haynes as he moved over to the replicator to get a drink and take a few moments to get himself under control. She sipped her tea quietly and waited. After a few seconds the Lt. moved over to one of the empty chairs in front of her desk and sat down, sitting on the edge for a few seconds before sliding back into the chair and finally meeting her gaze. He took a drink of his water and hesitated before speaking. "The reputation that preceded you appears to have been a bit exaggerated sir though I certainly don't want to put that to the test again..." He gave a wan smile "You're right about the chip, since my first run in with an overzealous Lieutenant I've carried it around like a bat..." He sighed. "I assure you, if you ever truly cross me, you will find out just how well earned my reputation is," Eva said with a nod. "I'm Betazed, and as such I respect honesty, and you were honest even if disrespectful. Apology accepted." "But to the question at hand." Haynes said, as he lowered the glass to his lap and cradled it in both hands. "I've found the ship to be a real sweetheart, she's a marvel of technological achievement with an experienced command complement and hard-working crew, I couldn't have asked for any better for my first taste of running a department and It's kept me extremely busy... just like I'd hoped. I've gotten to know several of the officers both within and without my department and I must say I've been impressed... especially by some of the technicians in science." He paused, "I'm looking forward to serving on this ship for some time to come." Eva nodded. "What are your areas of specialty Lt? Tell me more about you? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, CSO, Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes, 1328) Eva nodded. "What are your areas of specialty Lt? Tell me more about you?" Jack blinked. The whole question of specialties and such was just an icebreaker of course, she had his file at hand and knew everything about him that Starfleet and Captain Sash knew. Commander Straton was a sharp cookie and was giving him an opportunity to shed some insight into himself, something that Starfleet records might not show. Sash had done that as well of course and he had given the pat answers, since she was a Betazed might it be helpful to their working together to offer her a little tidbit? It was something to think about. "My specialties are in volcanology, particle physics and stellar cartography commander." He paused. "I was in the midst of making a graduate study of exobiology when the civil war started." His face hardened and his throat clenched but he fought them away, he wasn't going to allow that this time. "I was doing my thesis on microbial populations of Lunera 7's third moon Dione and had uncovered evidence that many of the life forms had evolved from species transported up from the planet itself and were not native to the moon contrary to popular conception." The work he had done on the subject had been exhaustive, some of the best he had ever accomplished. He involuntarily gritted his teeth and had to close his eyes a second as he relaxed his jaw. "That was all thrown under the bus when I heard my wife and children were dead because of Doenitzs' attack on Andoria, of course since she was telepathic I had already felt the bond break and was half out of my mind." He looked her full in the face. "My career in Starfleet was in jeopardy because of it as well as I'm sure you're no doubt aware. I cracked for a while and was treated by a Counselor who had absolutely no respect for my situation, he was marginal at the best of times and he was overwhelmed when news of the attacks circulated." He fought down the urge to stand up and pace. "He also red-flagged my profile despite signs I was making positive progress which I find it hard to forgive him for, as though I didn't have enough to worry about at the time." (Reply: Straton) "I used it as motivation sir and overcame it. I dug deep and showed my commanding officers that I wasn't going to let it debilitate me which is why I'm in the position I'm in today." His eyes didn't flinch away from her face, if she was trying to read him which he trusted she wouldn't do without telling him she would know he was being completely truthful. "I still struggle with it at times but it seems to be getting easier here, I don't know why. Maybe it's the position and maybe not, perhaps it has something to do with being on a different ship but at any rate I find myself at times relaxing and flowing with it. I plan on returning to my studies eventually and finishing up my thesis, after that I'm not sure what I'll study next but be assured I'm always looking to improve and make myself a more accomplished and a more well-rounded officer." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1329) Eva listened silently letting Hanyes finish speaking before speaking herself. She didn't need to be an empath to see that he still carried some deep emotional scars, but being one she had a good idea just how deep those scars ran. "She was your Imzadi," Eva said, it was more statement than question. She looked Haynes in the eye holding his gaze with her own for several seconds before finally opening one of her desk drawers and pulling out a small holo-emitter and placing it on the desk between them. She activated the emitter and the projector came to life showing a man smiling while holding two small babies one in each arm. "My Imzadi," Eva explained, "and my son and daughter; Evan and Alexandra. He is First Officer of the USS Boudicca, Commander Stolev, and I haven't seen them in months. I miss them terribly. I sympathize with your loss, but I'm curious why you never returned to Betezed. You carry a terrible wound, and it is customary for the surviving member of any bonded couple to seek the comfort and support of family and friends with such a great loss and one amplified by the loss of children as well." She looked at the holo of her own children with a pained expression just the thought of losing them too terrible to bear. "No non-telepath can even begin to understand the level of pain you have suffered. Not only has your heart been broken but your mind has a hole where your Imzadi use to be. You have made great progress overcoming what would have broken most non-telepaths. I would recommend seeking out any surviving family your wife may have left on Betezed and seek their support. They can help you cope with the loss. In the meantime, if you would permit me, I can help you start the healing process. Though I am by no means a mind healer, I am very well versed in the mental disciplines and we had an actual Betazed Mind Healer serve on board the Boudicca for a time. In the end the choice is yours." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (USS Hades - First Officers Office - CSO, Lt. (jg) Jericho Haynes - 1330) "She was your Imzadi," Commander Straton said, looking at Jack intently for a long moment before retrievi ng an object from a desk drawer. It was a cube some 2 and one half inches per side which he recognized as a holo-emitter. A man appeared above it after its activation with two babies in his arms and a gloating smile upon his face, obviously their father. "My Imzadi," She stated in explanation."and my son and daughter; Evan and Alexandra. He is First Officer of the USS Boudicca, Commander Stolev, and I haven't seen them in months. I miss them terribly. I sympathize with your loss, but I'm curious why you never returned to Betazed. Though I am by no means a mind healer, I am very well versed in the mental disciplines and we had an actual Betazed Mind Healer serve on board the Boudicca for a time. In the end the choice is yours." Jack shook his head, there was obviously a misunderstanding here. "Shilae is... was human with the "gift" as I've heard it called. She was sent to Betazed to learn from some of Betazeds foremost teachers of the art. I met her after she had returned to Earth and it was love at first sight." He paused for a moment as he considered how to proceed. "So you see there's a bit of a break in the chain ... I ... there was no one to turn to to seek guidance in the matter except the aforementioned counselor who I didn't have confidence in. As for your offer commander ... sir." For one who tended to diverge from the formalities he still wasn't about to drop them in front of the FO, not so soon after screwing up especially. " ... I'm honored. And you're not the only one to extend that offer. ~Would it sacrifice any of my mental faculties while in the midst of an important mission? A good question. One that the commander probably has already considered before she made it. To bring up the question would probably insult her.~ "After this mission if the offer still stands I'll take you up on it but for now I'll have to decline." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1331) Haynes shook his head, there was obviously a misunderstanding here. "Shilae is... was human with the "gift" as I've heard it called. She was sent to Betazed to learn from some of Betazed's foremost teachers of the art. And you're not the only one to extend that offer. After this mission if the offer still stands I'll take you up on it but for now I'll have to decline." Eva's eye's narrowed angrily. She didn't like being made to look foolish and that's what had just happened. She picked up the PADD with Lt. Haynes personnel file on it and looked at it again, going over the data it contained on his now deceased wife. "There appear to be some gaps in your file Lieutenant," She said, placing the PADD back down on her desk. "Particularly concerning the details of your wife's background. It mentions that she was schooled on Betezed and her telepathic rating, which is about average for most Betazoid's. I therefore inferred she was a Betazoid, my apologies. I will see to it that the gaps in your record are filled. As for my offer, it is of course your right to refuse. You have no reason to trust me, especially with something as valuable as your mind. I can't say I'd be eager to accept such an offer from someone I had just met either. Give it time, if you wish, but I give you my word that I will not allow any harm come to you physically or mentally should you decide to take me up on my offer at a later time." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1438) "I was intrigued, because I had found the required Tactical and Security courses at the Academy to be among my most taxing. I chose to welcome the challenge,"Ensign T'Vof said. Eva nodded, picking up the PADD on her desk and looking at it while taking a sip of her drink all while formulating her next question. "The occupation ended over 30 years ago," She said, putting the PADD down, and turning her attention back to the Ensign. "How do you feel about Cardassian's now? Could you work with them? Serve next to them on the same ship or station? We had a Cardassian CMO on the Boudicca for a period of time." Eva watched the Ensign closely waiting for her reply. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - First Officers Office - ATAC Ensign (jg) Lo'ren T'Vof - 1439) The First Officer glanced over a PADD before responding with a further question. ~Straton is definitely more intense than Sash.~ Lo'ren observed the former Marine, not outrightly, but she always tended to 'people watch', another habit she had picked up early in life - it didn't pay to be unobservant when you had beligerent soldiers watching your every move. Lo'ren felt her mental braces shudder slightly from the inside out. ~Not one to beat around the bush, are we Straton.~ She raised an eyebrow slightly, wondering why this might have come up. "I, thus far, have not served with a Cardassian, Commander, and I do not know how I would be in that situation." She sipped her tea and considered the question. "I suppose that if I was to serve with a Cardassian, I would do my best to look at the uniform as the deciding factor in my behaviour." Lo'ren lowered her cup and settled it in her lap, steadying her hand in the process. "I have memories from the time I was two years old, Commander, seven years before the Occupation ended. I was working in the mines from the time I was 5 years old because my intellingence surpassed that of my peers. The Vulcan in me decided that. Being as small as I was I was an ideal candidate for machinery repair. That resulted in the scar you can see on my face. You can see the other end of the same scar on my hand." She held up her left hand briefly for Eva to see. "Having trained for Kohlinar - though I proved too attached to my emotions to complete the training - I can control myself. I could work with a Cardassian if need be, but don't ask me to socialize with them. I don't think I would prove good company." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1440) "Having trained for Kohlinar - though I proved too attached to my emotions to complete the training - I can control myself. I could work with a Cardassian if need be, but don't ask me to socialize with them. I don't think I would prove good company," Ensign T'Vof said. "Too attached to your emotions," Eva reiterated, "I would say so. On the holodeck when you saw that first Cardassian the hatred you felt was quite strong wasn't it. I know, I felt it too as I was standing only a few feet away from you. Feeling that strong an emotional reaction from someone who has undergone Vulcan mental training is...highly unusual. I just want it understood that I expect you to do your duty regardless of your personal feelings be they Cardassian or not. Your social life is no concern to me. Understood?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades - First Officers Office - ATAC Ensign (jg) Lo'ren T'Vof - 1441) "I just want it understood that I expect you to do your duty regardless of your personal feelings be they Cardassian or not. Your social life is no concern to me. Understood?" Like any other troop commander, that wasn't a question but an order. Lo'ren kept a steady gaze with the Betazed. ~No use in trying to explain or gloss over it with this woman - is there, Mutt? That'll really get you no where.~ "Understood ma'am." Lo'ren lifted her cup and savoured the spicy, smooth texture of her drink. "Permission to speak?" (reply Straton, assume a yes) "I duly apologize for any discomfort I may have caused from that emotional outburst in the Holodeck. It was un-professional of me and most inapropriate. I am adding more meditation and mental training sessions to see that it won't happen again." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, FO Commander Eva Straton, 1442) "Permission to speak?" "Of course," Eva said, taking another sip of her tea. "I duly apologize for any discomfort I may have caused from that emotional outburst in the Holodeck. It was un-professional of me and most inappropriate. I am adding more meditation and mental training sessions to see that it won't happen again," Ensign T'Vof said. Eva snorted a small smile crossing her face momentarily as she put her drink down. "I am not a Vulcan Ensign. Why would I find an emotional outburst either discomforting or insulting? I'm an empath, and a *very* strong one at that. I do my best to shield myself from the sea of emotions that I'm surrounded in daily. I can block most of the low level day to day emotions and thoughts of those around me but powerful emotions still raise a red flag, though I can block them as well if I need to. To feel such powerful emotions from someone who has under gone Vulcan mental training is, as I said, unusual. I simply wished to make sure that you are indeed in control of your emotions and that they do not control you. I'm sure you can see this from my perspective. If you had someone under your command who had gone through Vulcan mental training but was still experiencing powerful emotional outbursts of hatred would it not give you reason for concern? We have addressed the situation. You have acknowledged the incident, and promised that it will not interfere with your duties on board this ship. I will hold you to that. If at some point in the future, you feel that it is becoming more than you can handle on your own I expect you to seek the assistance of the ships Counselor, that's what they are there for." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades, First Officers Office, ATAC Ensign (jg) Lo'ren T'Vof, 1443) She listened to the First officer gently, but firmly dismiss her apology and remind her that counsellors are available on board should she need one. She could argue that the mix of Bajoran and Vulcan in her - both deeply emotional peoples while extremely different in their approach to them - and the lack of training she had received early in life had contributed to her misstep, but Lo'ren could see no purpose in extending that line of reasoning. Straton was satisfied for the moment, she would also. After taking another sip of her tea, Lo'ren nodded. "Yrs, ma'am, if I need the help I will make an appointment with Counsellor Ripley. What else would you like to discuss?" Lo'ren knew when not to beat around the bush and expected that the Betazoid officer would appreciate the brevity. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stardate: 2408.07.14 USS Hades- First officer's Office - aTAC/CSEC - Lt. Baylon Trinin- 0900) Baylon sounded the enunciator to the first officer's office at exactly 0900 hours. He knew well enough that the commander was a stickler for promptness and did not want to be either early or late for his first official meeting with the new First officer. (reply Eva) The door slid aside and Baylon strode into the Spartan office. He snapped to attention with a click of his heels and reported in. "Lieutenant Trinin Reporting to Commander Straton as ordered, Sir." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades- First officer's Office - ACOUNS - Ensign Anamitra Ripley- 0955) Ana was humming a lullaby as she strode down the corridor to the commander's office. She was cradling a cup of authentic Mayan-style drinking chocolate, which was absolutely delightful. The smile on her face was genuine and she was looking forward to meeting with Commander Straton, the ex-marine turned first officer. The counselor had taken a good deal of time to familiarize herself with the woman's dossier and service record. It was most assuredly impressive. The rare opportunity to meet with the first officer outside of a counseling session was a welcomed chance to get to know her better without the added pressure of a counseling session or psychological evaluation. Ana reached out and pressed the door chime to let the commander know that she had arrived. (reply Eva) The doors slid open and Ana stepped into the almost bare looking office. It seemed that Commander Straton had not yet taken the time to decorate her office. Ana would have to send her something nice to get her started. A sort of welcoming gift. "Good morning Commander." she said cheerfully. "How has your morning been?" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades- First officer's Office - CMO Angeni O. Windsong-Trommashere- 1000) Angeni sat infront of a cabinet in the main portion of sickbay. She reorganized the cabinet, putting everything where it was supposed to be. She checked expiration dates on everything, making sure the meds and supplies were in date. As she went, she made a list of things that were needed so that when it came down to it, she wouldn't forget later on and have to go through the whole process again. As she moved into her office to take a sip of coffee, she heard her chronometer going off, and she put what she was working on down in a hurry. The FO had requested a meeting with her today, and what she knew of the woman was that she did not take kindly to those who were late to appointments with her. Everyone had known that she was going to a meeting, so she was able to slip out of the bay with little more than a quick head bob towards a nurse, letting him know that she was leaving. After a few moments, she came to the FO's office door, and she hit the door chime. As the doors slid open, she plastered a smile on her face and greeted the FO warmly. "Good morning, Ma'am, how are you doing today?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (USS Hades- First officer's Office - aCEO - Lieutenant Darla Wright- 1105) Darla stepped out of the turbo lift and made her way directly to the first Officers office. Already she was dreading the encounter. She had found herself unexpectedly delayed in main Engineering, which had turned into her being tardy for the scheduled meeting with the Commander. Darla took a deep breath, attempted to center herself in vain and pressed the door chime. (reply Eva) The acting CEO stepped into the room quickly as soon as the doors opened, preparing herself for the tongue-lashing that she knew was coming. "My apologies for being tardy, Commander. I was detained unexpectedly in main Engineering." She explained and prepared herself for whatever happened next. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ end compile
